Mongolia is a vast country with a range of different natural habitats and ecosystems from the taiga forest to the Gobi desert. Country is mostly steppe, but you also find taiga forest in the North, majestic Altai mountains in the West and SW, grassland steppe in the East and Gobi desert in the South.
Despite its 1,564,600 square kilometer area, just over 3 million people live in Mongolia. About 45% of the entire population lives in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. Many of the Mongolians still live in a nomadic lifestyle herding their livestock throughout the year.

Having this as a background is not difficult to imagine that Mongolia is a natural paradise with several untouched areas. The vasts landscapes offer endless habitat for a good variety of bird species along with some unique wildlife including birds like Palla’s Sandgrouse and Altai Snowcock, but also for magnificient mammals such as Snow Leopard!

Barcelona Birding Point offers a tour to Mongolia every year in mid May.

Tour Daily Planning:

Day 1. Overnight stay in Ulaanbaatar, where we will be birding around the hotel as it is located in one of the best birding sites, called Songino Resort, near the city. Here it is possible to enjoy some excellent birds including Azure Tit, Azure-winged Magpie, White-cheeked Starling, Taiga
Flycatcher, Red-throated Thrush, Naumann’s Thrush, Dusky Thrush and many other
migrants that breed in the farther north.

Days 2-8. Altai Mountains in Khovd Province
After we land at the local airport in Khovd town, we will transfer to our Snow Leopard
site (~150 km) where we will stay in a yurt camp operated by the local communities. We
will spend a week in the Altai Mountains and adjacent semi-deserts in western
Mongolia in search of elusive Snow Leopard, and other wildlife and birds. We work
with the experienced local guides who will help us spot this large cat and other
wildlife during our stay including Saiga Antelope, Siberian Ibex, and Goitered Gazelle among other. Here we will also target really sought after birds including Altai Snowcock, Pallas’s Sandgrouse,  Mongolian Grond-Jay, Brown Accentor, Gündelstädt’s Redstart, Mongolian Lark and Pied Wheatear among other.

On the way back to Khovd town after the Altai Mountains, we
will be birding at the south-western edge of Khar Us Lake which is not far from the main road between Khovd town. Here it is possible to enjoy Yellow Wagtail (White-headed), Greater Sandplover and White-headed Duck along with good numbers of migratory birds.

Days 9-10. Khovd to Ulaanbaatar, transfer to Mungunmorit forest
We will fly back to Ulaanbaatar. After arrival, we will transfer to Mungunforest forest
and overnight in tents. We will get up at 4:00am and have coffee and biscuits, then walk
a fez dozens meters to get in the hide which is made of tree branches. Black-billed
Capercaillies will start displaying at around 4:30am and peak display takes place right
after the sunrise.
Mungunmorit forest is located around 180 km to the east from UB and it is one of the
best places to see magnificent Black-billed Capercaillie in a close range. Unlike other
areas, our Black-billed Capercaillie site does not require to trek much which means all
tour members will have equal chances to see this species. Other species to enjoy here includes Daurian Redstart, Red-throated Thrush, Daurian Jackdaw, Pine Bunting, Three-toed Woodpecker, Black Woodpecker and Azure Tit among other goodies.

Day 11. Gun Galuut Nature Reserve
Gun Galuut Nature Reserve has a great diversity of ecosystems even though it has a
comparatively small area. The complex of high mountains, steppes, rivers, lakes and wetlands are kept in their original condition. We will visit a wetland where rare White-
naped Cranes breed, and several small lakes for waterfowls and waders. Demoiselle Cranes are also common here and the number of specialities to enjoy will likely include Stejneger’s Scoter, Demoiselle Crane, Whooper Swan, White-winged Redstart, Mongolian Gull, White-winged Tern, Small Snowfinch, Falcated Duck, Baikal Teal, Pallas’s Reed Bunting and Citrine Wagtail. The area is also noted for some interesting mammals including  Corsac Fox, Tarbagan Marmot, Long-tailed Ground Squirrel and
Brandt’s Vole.

Day 12. Hustai National Park (100 km to the west from UB)
The Hustai National Park was established in 1993 to protect reintroduced wild horses
also known as Przewalski’s Horse. This is a great place for birds of prey and we will look for Steppe Eagle, Upland Buzzard, Saker Falcon, Cinereous Vulture, Amur Falcon and Himalatan Vulture. Interesting passerines common in the area include Meadow Bunting and Mongolian Lark. Daurian Partridge is also a sought-after target here! The park also supports a large number of Wapiti and Tarbagan Marmots. On the southern steppe of the park, there are some Mongolian Gazelles.

Day 13. Transfer back to the Ulaanbaatar International Airport so the tour participants can connect with their flights back home.

ASSEMBLING

In Ulaanbaatar we will stay in Hotel Mongolica (3 stars). The rest of the nights we will stay in modern yur camps.
WEATHER
Temperatures can be low in the Altai Mountains, and you may expect to be between 0ºC and 10ºC at times during the tour. In the steppes it can be windy, but not really often. Temperature will be higher in the center of the day and we will try to avoid central hours of the day when exploring some desertic lands.

Mongolia es un vasto país centroasiático con una buena variedad de hábitats y ecosistemas, desde la taiga hasta el desierto del Gobi. Aunque las estepas cubren buena parte del país, encontramos bosques boreales en el Norte, las imponentes montañas del Altai en el Oeste y el Suroeste, los herbazales al Este y el desierto del Gobi al Sur. A pesar de su gran tamaño (1.564.600 kilómetros cuadrados), la población de Mongolia es de a penas 3 millones de personas. De éstos, aproximadamente un 45% vive en la capital, Ullaanbaatar. Muchos mongoles aún conservan su ancestral modo de vida nómada, moviendo sus rebaños por las estepas a lo largo del año.

Con estos antecedentes no es difícil imaginar que Mongolia es un paraíso natural con numerosas zonas prácticamente inalteradas por la mano del hombre. Sus vastos paisajes ofrecen un hábitat único para una buena variedad de especies de aves incluyendo varias especies emblemáticas como Ganga de Pallas, Perdigallo altaico o Herrerillo ciáneo junto con mamíferos de ensueño como el legendario Leopardo de las nieves!

Plan Diario del Tour:

Día 1. Estada de una noche en Ulanbator, donde aprovecharemos la tarde y un poco la siguiente mañana para hacer un poco de pajareo cerca de nuestro hotel. Songino Resort es una de las mejores zonas para aves de la capital, y aquí podremos observar aves como Herrerillo ciáneo, Rabilargo asiático, Estornino gris, Papamoscas de la taiga, Zorzal papirrojo, Zorzal de Naumann’s, Zorzal eunomo y muchos otros migrantes que nidifican más al Norte.

Días 2-8. Altai Mountains, en Khovd. Después de aterrizar en el aeropuerto local de Khovd, recorreremos unos 150 kilómetros hasta la mejor zona para observar Leopardo de las nieves. Aquí nos alojaremos en un campo de yurtas operado por la comunidad local. Durante los días que estemos en las montañas del Altai y los semi desiertos adyacentes buscaremos este elusivo depredador junto con diferentes aves. Trabajaremos en contacto permanente con experimentados guías locales encontrar el Leopardo de las nieves pero también Saiga, Íbex siberiano y Gacela de Goitered. Entre las aves, disfrutaremos del fantástico Perdigallo altaico, Ganga de Pallas, Arrendajo terrestre mongol, Acentor pardo, Colirrojo de Gündelstädt, Calandria de Mongolia y Collalba pía entre muchas otras!

El último día de nuestra estancia en la zona exploraremos el extremo Suroeste del lago Khar Us, que no está muy alejado de la carretera principal. Aquí es posible observar Malvasía cabeciblanca, Lavandera boyera (raza leucocephala) o Chorlitejo mongol grande además de numerosos especies migratorias.

Días 9-10. De Khovd a Ulaanbaatar y tránsfer al bosque Mungunmorit.
Vuelo interno de vuelta a Ulaanbaatar. Después de nuestra llegada, tránsfer al bosque Mungunforest donde pasaremos la noche en un campamento. A la mañana siguiente nos levantaremos a les 4:00 para disfrutar de un fantástico lek to de Urogallo manchado. Estos leks sólo están activos justo después del amanecer!

El bosque de Mungunmorit está localizado cerca de 180 quilómetros al Este desde Ulan Bator y es uno de los mejores sitios para observar este Urogallo. A diferencia de en otras áreas, aquí no es necesario ningún tréking para llegar a la zona en cuestión. Otras especies de interés en la zona incluyen Colirrojo dáurico, Zorzal papirrojo, Pico tridáctilo, Escribano cabeciblanco, Herrerillo ciáneo, Grajilla oriental y muchos otros.

Día 11. Gun Galuut Nature Reserve. A pesar de su relativamente pequeño tamaño (para los estándares mongoles), esta reserva natural posee una gran biodiversidad. Dentro encontramos un entramados de alta montaña y estepas con numerosos ríos, lagos y humedales prácticamente sin huella humana. Aquí buscaremos las muy raras Grulla cuelliblancas, con menos de 5.000 ejemplares en estado salvaje, junto con una numerosos limícolas y Anátidas. Las Grullas damiselas también estarán presentes y, junto a estas especies como Negrón siberiano, Cisne cantor, Gaviota mongol, Fumarel aliblanco, Cerceta de Baikal,  Gorrión de David, Cerceta de alfanjes, Escribano de Palla’s o Lavandera cetrina. La zona también acoge mamíferos como el Zorro Corsac y la Marmota sibírica.

Día 12. Parque Nacional Hustai (100 km al Oeste de Ulan Bator)
El Parque Nacional Hustai fué establecido en 1933 para proteger los reintroducidos caballos salvajes conocidos como Caballos de Przewalski. A parte de esta raza de caballos, la zona es excelente para aves rapaces, y podremos observar Águila de estepa, Halcón sacre, Buitre negro, Halcón de Amur, Busardo mongol y Buitre del Himalaya entre otros. Aquí encontraremos interesantes passeriformes como Calandria mongol o Escribano de Brandt mientras que la muy deseada Perdiz dáurica se mueve en pequeños grupos por los herbazales. El Parque Nacional también acoge buenas poblaciones de Renos y Marmotas sibíricas mientras en la zona Sur del parque se pueden observar Gacelas de Mongolia.

Día 13. Último tránsfer hasta el Aeropuerto Internacional de Ulan Bator (Ulaanbaator) de los diferentes participantes en el tour.

En Ulan Bator (Ulaanbaatar) nos alojaremos en el Hotel Mongolica (3 estrellas). El resto de las noches lo padaremos en modernos campamentos de yurtas.
METEOROLOGÏA
En Mayo, las temperaturas en el Altái se pueden situar entre los 0ºC y los 10ºC con bastante frecuencia. El tiempo acostumbra a ser soleado y agradable durante la mayor parte del día. En la estepa puede hacer viento, y entonces la sensación de frío aumenta. Intentaremos evitar las horas centrales, cuando la temperatura puede subir hasta los 25ºC.
